1. Avoid using plastic bags at checkout
Instead of reaching out to plastic bags to place your items, you can use cotton bags as they are reusable and a more sustainable way to carry your items.
2. Stop buying bottled water
You can save way more money if you invest in a good water bottle instead of buying bottled water often. Many of the bottled water ends up in landfill and is often never recycled.
3. Buy second-hand clothes wherever possible
As much as we love to buy clothes that are trendy in the moment, it is important to go about it in a sustainable manner. Be more conscious on what you purchase. Do you really need that $20 shirt from a fast-fashion brand? You might be able to find the same or similar clothes from thrift shops or on customer to customer selling platforms such as Carousell and eBay. Buying second hand clothes also go easy on your wallet and you can set aside more money for other goals.
4. Get your device repaired instead of buying new ones
Try to avoid buying new device whenever it malfunctions. Instead, look into the issue and see if it can be repaired. By doing this, you can reduce tech waste. If the device is no longer usable, you can dispose your device through the e-recycling programs. You can look through the lists of partners who are part of the programs through this link.
5. Use sustainable search engine like Ecosia
Ecosia uses 100% renewable energy for their servers. Every search request removes 1kg of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. They are also privacy friendly as they do not sell data to advertisers and anonymize all searches in one week. They also plant trees with the searches that they get and is free to use!
6. Stop accepting disposable cutlery and napkin
With the rise of ordering food from food delivery apps, we often get many cutlery and napkins. Instead of accepting disposable cutlery, you can opt out in most of the food delivery apps such as FoodPanda and Deliveroo. Instead of using napkin, you can use old cloth that you no longer wear.
7. Have home-cooked meal instead of takeaways
If possible, try to cook your own meals at home. It is a much healthier and more sustainable way to have your meals. You are able to control what goes in your food and how much you are cooking. This way you are able to limit the amount of food you cook based on the portions you usually eat. You are also able to avoid using disposables that you would usually get when getting takeaways.
